Critical illness benefits
Critical illness insurance is exactly that – insurance that offers cover to the life insured should they develop or contract a critical illness. Why's it important? Because people don't always know what's lurking in their family trees, and many critical illnesses are actually inherited.
The 4 main critical illness conditions – which incidentally account for 75%-90% of all critical illness claims – are heart attack, cancer, stroke and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).
We cover all 4 of these conditions under our 3 critical illness benefits: Basic, Core and Comprehensive. Our Basic benefit covers the above mentioned 4 main critical illnesses while our Core and Comprehensive benefits cover a total of 33 conditions and 54 conditions respectively.
All 3 of these benefits offer:
- 2 payout options: maximum (100%) or severity based (25-100%)
- Maximum cover of R4 million
- 2 guarantee periods: fixed (15 years) and experience rated (annually reviewable)
- Standalone or accelerated options
- A 14-day survival period
- Term up to age 65 or for life
- A minimum entry age of 18
- A maximum entry age of 65
Our Comprehensive Critical Illness benefit not only includes a catch-all benefit and automatic reinstatements, but even has a children's benefit, allowing the insured to claim for their children should they suffer from any of the conditions included under this benefit. And children's claims under this benefit don't affect the insured's cover.
Struggling to choose a critical illness benefit? We've got that covered! The two issues to consider are price and the benefit required – we'll show you how.

Altrisk was the first insurance service provider in South Africa to adopt the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa's (ASISA) standardised critical illness definitions (SCIDEP). These definitions ensure all critical illnesses are described in the same way, by all service providers across the industry, to minimise potential confusion among consumers. By using these definitions, we aim to make our benefits even clearer for policyholders and financial advisors.
